Situated at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers, Fort Smith was established as a western frontier military post in 1817 and became well known as a base for migrants’ and pioneers headed into the “Wild West.”

Revered for its law enforcement heritage. Fort Smith is known for events in the history of the United States judicial system with Judge Isaac C. Parker holding court for the Federal Government in the Western District of Arkansas, just before the turn of the century. The territory was at the forefront of advancing principles of law and order through notable contributions to the United States judicial system as well as the United States Marshals Service.

Fort Smith is also the birthplace of William O. Darby, a career United States Army officer who fought in World War II, where he was killed in action in Italy. He was posthumously promoted to brigadier general. Darby led the famous Darby’s Rangers, which evolved into the U.S. Army Rangers.
